TRAIN HORN VOLUME TO BE LOWER

Caltrain staff has begun a project to restore the horns on our equipment to their original location and substantially reduce the noise produced by the train horns.
We have successfully installed and tested the redeployment of the horns beneath the equipment and we have ordered all the parts and materials necessary to complete this project. Some reconfigured equipment already is in service on the Caltrain line.
The project entails restoring the horns in a compartment beneath the rail equipment, where they were located as recently as July.
The horns were deployed beneath the equipment in 2001 in response to community complaints about noise. A safety inspection in late July determined that the horns were not making the specific, sequential blasts required by federal law.
Because we were out of compliance with the federal regulations, we were required to move immediately to reconfigure the horns so that they were able to make the necessary sequential blasts.
Now, we are proceeding with a project to restore the horns beneath the equipment in a manner that meets all federal regulations.
By restoring the horns beneath the equipment, the sound produced by the horns will be directed at the tracks, a low angle that will minimize how far the sound disperses.
Completing this project is regarded with the highest urgency and priority at Caltrain.
In the meantime, we apologize for the aggravation you have endured due to the horn noise.
